Also, having someone to talk to can definitely help you work through the puzzles. The original game especially has a pretty creepy feel to it (that music is pretty eerie at times) and can be a bit off-putting if you're playing it on your own. IMO, the best way to play Myst is with a good friend, a pen and paper, and a nice bottle of wine. You may have to explore some of the environments (a lot of which are gorgeous, BTW, especially in something like Myst 3), but the environments generally aren't so big that you don't know where you're going. Things aren't shoved in your face, but they generally aren't hidden, either. The puzzles (with some notable exceptions) are well-designed and logical, so solving them feels like you've actually solved a problem by working it out, rather than just having pressed 'x' at the right time or found the right pixel to click (this is less true in some of the later games, although I think that even Myst V does a pretty good job at avoiding pixel hunts). It launches you into a really interesting world and lets you explore it, slowly revealing backstory and explaining mechanics.
